How ContainerGrid Expanded Its Circular Economy Platform into South Africa

Overview

Founded in Munich, ContainerGrid is a B2B SaaS company building a Workflow OS for circular supply chains. Its neutral platform orchestrates end-of-life material flows by connecting recyclers, dismantlers, producers, and logistics operators in a single digital ecosystem. By increasing transparency and coordination across the value chain, ContainerGrid helps organizations manage circular processes more efficiently while supporting compliance with evolving environmental regulations.

With more than 70 customers and over 3,500 operators using its platform, ContainerGrid has established itself as a trusted technology partner for the circular economy. As Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) regulations continue to expand globally, the company identified South Africa as a promising market for international growth.

South Africa's maturing EPR framework and increasingly organized recycling sector offered a strong opportunity to validate demand for digital workflow solutions while exploring how the platform could support local stakeholders across the circular economy.

Why ContainerGrid Chose German Accelerator

While ContainerGrid had successfully built its business in Europe, entering an emerging market required a deeper understanding of local business practices, procurement processes, and partnership structures. To accelerate that learning process, the company joined the German Accelerator program.

"The program offered structured, on-the-ground access that would have taken us months to replicate independently," says Aron Handreke, CEO and Co-Founder of ContainerGrid. "That combination made it an obvious choice."

How German Accelerator Helped

Throughout the program, ContainerGrid worked closely with experienced mentors and local experts while participating in curated B2B meetings with organizations across South Africa's recycling ecosystem.

Rather than relying on cold outreach, the company was introduced directly to relevant stakeholders, allowing the team to validate market assumptions and build meaningful relationships much more quickly.

"The mentor network and the curated B2B meeting formats stood out," Aron explains. "Being introduced to the right organizations directly compressed our learning curve significantly."

The program also helped ContainerGrid better understand the realities of doing business in South Africa. Through mentor guidance and post-meeting debriefs, the team gained valuable insight into procurement cycles, decision-making processes, and the importance of relationship-building.

One of the biggest lessons was that successful market entry depends on trust just as much as technology. That realization reinforced ContainerGrid's strategy of entering new markets through strong local anchor partners rather than building operations independently. The experience has since shaped the company's broader international expansion strategy, influencing how it approaches opportunities not only in South Africa but also in markets such as Japan and East Africa.

What ContainerGrid Achieved After the Program

Following German Accelerator, ContainerGrid left South Africa with a validated understanding of the local market and a clearer roadmap for future expansion. The team established relationships with key organizations across the recycling ecosystem, identified promising partnership opportunities, and confirmed that South Africa represents an attractive market for its platform.

The program also strengthened the company's international go-to-market strategy by reinforcing a partner-led expansion model that can be replicated across future markets. While several conversations initiated during the program are still ongoing, ContainerGrid now has a much clearer understanding of where its technology fits within South Africa's circular economy and how to build a sustainable presence over time.

"Go with genuine curiosity, not just a pitch deck. And use structured programs like German Accelerator—the pre-qualification of counterparts alone is worth it."

— Aron Handreke, Co-Founder of ContainerGrid

Advice for Other Startup Founders Considering International Expansion

For Aron, one of the biggest lessons is that founders should never assume a successful product in one market will automatically succeed in another.

Don't underestimate how much local context matters. The platform or product that works in Germany needs to be re-validated—not just translated.

He also encourages founders to approach new markets with curiosity rather than assumptions.
